The Cardinals defeated the Royals, 8-4, last night in Kansas City, salvaging a split of the teams' two-game series at Kauffman Stadium. St. Louis, which finished up its latest road trip by winning five of eight contests, has dropped five straight games at Busch Stadium.

Kansas City is averaging just 2.0 runs per game on the road this month -- easily the fewest in the majors (Pirates are second worst with 3.0 rpg). Since beginning the season by winning four of their first five road games, the Royals are 9-24 in their last 33 games away from home.

St. Louis has won five of its last six meetings with Kansas City overall, holding the Royals to four or fewer runs in each of those victories. The Cards have defeated the Royals three straight times at Busch Stadium by a combined score of 11-5.

Edinson Volquez allowed a career-high 12 runs (11 earned) in 1.0 IP five days ago vs. the Astros, taking the loss, and snapping his personal two-game win streak. Volquez is 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA in his last four starts vs. the Cardinals.

Carlos Martinez allowed one run (earned) in 7.0 innings last Friday in Seattle, and despite giving up just one run total in each of his last two outings, has two no-decisions for the efforts. Martinez, who will be making his first career start vs. the Royals tonight, has a 1.24 ERA in his last five starts -- lowest of any NL starter since May 30.

St. Louis has scored eight or more runs 21 times in 2016 -- tied with the Rockies for second most of any team in the majors (Red Sox -- 22). Kansas City has tallied 8+ runs just eight times this season (tied for 2nd fewest in AL).

ST. LOUIS -- Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost is willing to do whatever it takes to keep the scalding-hot bat of Kendrys Morales in the starting lineup.
Proof of that came Wednesday night in St. Louis, when Morales started in right field, the first time in eight years he opened a game as an outfielder. Usually a designated hitter, Morales handled four chances flawlessly, including a catch of Matt Carpenter's fourth-inning drive on which he banged into the wall.
