The Pirates took the loss against the Dodgers at PNC Park yesterday, falling, 5-4, for their first loss in four games. Today they embark on a nine-game road trip, where they have lost five consecutive, and nine of their past 10.

The Mariners were unable to complete a sweep of St. Louis on Sunday, losing, 11-6, at Safeco Field. The Mariners are 4-11 (.267) over their past 15 games -- second worst in the American League since June 11 (Rays -- 4-12, .250).

These two franchises last met in June 2013, and the Mariners hold a 6-4 record over the Pirates all-time. The Mariners are 5-1 versus the NL Central this season while the Pirates are just 2-4 against the AL West.

Jonathon Niese took the loss last Thursday, giving up five earned runs over 6.0 innings against the Giants. Niese is 0-3 with a 9.18 ERA in his last three starts, allowing six home runs in those outings (most in the NL since June 12).

Hisashi Iwakuma picked up his sixth loss of the season last Wednesday when he allowed five earned runs over 4.2 innings in Detroit. The Tigers went deep three times against Iwakuma -- the third time in the last four outings that he's allowed three home runs.

Jordy Mercer saw his 11-game hit streak come to an end on Monday with a 0-for-3 effort against the Dodgers, but extended his on-base streak to 12 straight games with two walks. Mercer is batting a team-best.351 since June 16.

SEATTLE -- Getting Wade Miley back from the disabled list might not be the ticket to the Seattle Mariners getting back into the pennant race, but it's a step in the right direction for a rotation that's had a rough June.
The veteran left-hander is scheduled to be back on the mound when the Mariners host Pittsburgh on Wednesday night, the final game of a two-game series with the Pirates (37-41).
