The Mets and Dodgers have met twice previously in the postseason: the Dodgers won in seven games in the 1988 NLCS, while New York swept the 2006 Division Series 3-0. This year, the Mets won four of seven regular-season meetings with Los Angeles.

The Dodgers have won three consecutive division crowns for the first time in franchise history. They were eliminated by St. Louis each of the previous two postseasons (2013 NLCS and 2014 NLDS). Los Angeles hasn't reached the World Series since winning the 1988 edition, the longest drought in franchise history without a WS appearance.

The Mets reached the postseason, won their division, and won 90-plus games this year (90-72), all for the first time since 2006. That year New York went 97-65 and advanced to the NLCS, losing to St. Louis in seven games.

David Wright is the only current Mets player to have played for the Mets in their last postseason appearance (2006). Wright is the franchise's all-time career leader in hits (1746), RBI (956), and runs scored (931); his 235 home runs rank second to Darryl Strawberry (252).

Jacob deGrom's 9.7 strikeouts per nine innings this season ranks as the fourth best rate all-time by a Mets starter, behind Dwight Gooden in 1984 (11.4), and David Cone in both 1990 (9.9) and 1992 (9.8). deGrom threw 7.2 two-hit shutout innings in his only start versus the Dodgers this season (July 26 in New York), getting a no-decision.

From September 3 (the date of his MLB debut) the end of the season, 21-year-old rookie shortstop Corey Seager led the Dodgers in batting (.337), home runs (4, tied with Justin Ruggiano), RBI (17), and runs scored (17).

Clayton Kershaw led the majors with a career-best 301 strikeouts this season. No major leaguer had reached 300 in a season since Randy Johnson (334) and Curt Schilling (316) in 2002, and no Dodger had done it since Sandy Koufax in 1966 (317). Kershaw is 6-0 with a 1.34 ERA (9 ER/60.1 IP) in nine career starts versus the Mets.
