The Mariners took two of three games against the Athletics at the end of August and have won nine of 13 games against Oakland this season. Oakland has shut out Seattle in three of its four wins -- all three coming at the O.co Coliseum.

After losing seven straight games, the Athletics are 7-7 since August 18. The A's lost the final game of their three-game series against the Angels on Wednesday, 9-4, and are 26-29 (.473) vs. the AL West this season despite scoring 4.7 runs per game against their division rivals.

The Mariners have won four of their last six games, including Wednesday's series finale against the Astros in Houston. Seattle is 16-14 since August 1, despite having the second-highest ERA in the American League over that span (5.47, 168/276.1).

Edgar Olmos made his first career start last Sunday against the White Sox, giving up three earned runs, five hits, and five walks while striking out two in 5.0 innings. Olmos is 1-0 with a 2.13 ERA (3/12.2) in five appearances for Seattle this season.

Aaron Brooks did not earn a decision last Saturday against the Diamondbacks, surrendering two earned runs and eight hits while striking out four in 6.0 innings. Since coming to Oakland from Kansas City, Brooks is 1-1 with a 5.32 ERA (13/22.0) in five appearances for the A's.

Brett Lawrie hit his 15th home run of the season on Wednesday and is batting .362 (17-for-47) with five home runs, four doubles, nine RBI, and 12 runs scored over his last 12 games. His 1.178 OPS since August 16 is the fifth-highest in the American League among batters with at least 50 plate appearances.

While they're doing just fine offensively without their top slugger, the surging Seattle Mariners could become even more prolific if Nelson Cruz can return.
With Cruz questionable for Sunday's series finale, the visiting Mariners go after their longest winning streak in a year when Hisashi Iwakuma seeks vengeance against the Oakland Athletics.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP)  Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon certainly was happy with his team's offense, especially with the Mariners' top slugger and leading hitter both on the bench.
Then again, McClendon has been pleased with the club's offense since the All-Star break, even if it might be too late to get the Mariners back into the playoff hunt.
