This is just the second series of the season between the Nationals and Cardinals. The Cardinals won the first series, taking two of three from the Nationals in an April series in Washington.

Washington wrapped up a nine-game homestand with a 7-4 comeback victory over Miami, giving the Nationals the series win. In all three series on the homestand, Washington split the first two games and then won the series by winning the finale in comeback fashion.

The Cardinals are coming off a series win at San Francisco. The series win is just one of three this season that the Cardinals have on the road against teams currently over .500 (also in April against the Nationals and in June against the Dodgers).

Over the past four seasons (since 2012), the Cardinals (359-257, .583) and the Nationals (346-269, .563) own the two highest winning percentage in all of baseball.

In 10 games as the Nationals leadoff batter since August 18, Jayson Werth is producing a slash line of .325/.413/.650 with two home runs, seven RBI, and 10 runs scored. Washington is 7-3 in those 10 games.

For the third time in his career, and the second time in the last eight days (also August 23), Jason Heyward finished a home run shy of his first career cycle. Heyward has six games in his career where he's finished a triple shy of the cycle.

If the Washington Nationals are going to make a September push, they're probably going to need Max Scherzer to start pitching like a Cy Young Award candidate again.

ST. LOUIS (AP)  Jason Heyward decided to cut loose for a change.
The usually reserved St. Louis outfielder celebrated in grand fashion after his two-run, tie-breaking double in the seventh inning keyed a five-run rally that helped the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Washington Nationals 8-5 on Monday night.
