The Cubs won the series, 2-1, the last time they faced the Dodgers in Los Angeles (August 1-3, 2014). Chicago recorded at least 10 hits in each game of that series, the first time since May 30-June 1, 2005 that the Cubs have had at least 10 hits in every game of a road series versus the Dodgers.

The Dodgers snapped an eight-game road losing streak (their longest single-season road losing streak since losing 10 in a row in August 2008) by sweeping the three-game series at Cincinnati earlier this week, their first road series-sweep of at least three games this season (had three such series-sweeps last season).

The Cubs are currently 20 games over .500 (73-53). Chicago has not been 20 or more games over .500 this late into the season by date or games played since finishing the 2008 season with a 97-64 record.

This matchup features the only two rookies with at least 20 home runs this season: the Cubs' Kris Bryant (20) and the Dodgers' Joc Pederson (23). However, they are also the only two rookies with at least 130 strikeouts this season, with Bryant totaling 152 and Pederson totaling 143 (first and tied for second most, respectively, in the NL among all players).

Over his last nine starts (since July 3), Clayton Kershaw has posted a 0.90 ERA while striking out 82 batters. Only six NL pitchers over the last 100 years have recorded a sub-1.00 ERA while striking out at least 80 batters over a nine-start span in a single season: Sandy Koufax (1962), Bob Gibson (1968), Tom Seaver (1971), J.R. Richard (1979), Randy Johnson (2000) and Clayton Kershaw (2014 and 2015).

Jason Hammel is averaging 10.33 strikeouts per nine innings in road games this season, the fifth most by a Cubs pitcher in the last 100 years and the most since Rich Harden in 2009 (11.50; minimum 10 road starts in season).
