St. Louis and San Francisco are meeting in the NLCS for the second time in three years. Overall, it is the fourth time these two will play for the NL pennant, following Cardinals wins in 1987 and 2012 and a Giants triumph in 2002.

The Cardinals are just the second team to make four consecutive NLCS appearances, joining the Braves from 1991-99 (eight). Overall, it will be St. Louis' 13th trip to the NLCS, the most all-time. The Cardinals set an NLDS record against the Dodgers with 20 hits from the seventh inning on. St. Louis is 22-22 in Game 1's all-time, with a 14-8 mark at home.

The Giants have reached the NLCS for the third time in the last five seasons and their seventh overall. They have advanced to the World Series each of the past four times reaching the NLCS (1989, 2002, 2010, 2012). San Francisco has won eight straight postseason rounds since 2010, the longest streak since the Yankees won 11 in a row from 1998-2001. The Giants are 22-11 all-time in Game 1's, with half of their wins coming on the road (including Wild Card Game).

Matt Carpenter led the Cardinals during the NLDS in runs (four), hits (six), doubles (three), home runs (three), and RBI (seven). The only other Cardinal to achieve those totals in a postseason series was David Freese in the 2011 NLCS.  All three of his NLDS home runs came off left-handers, of which he only hit two off during the regular season. Carpenter's .519 career regular season batting average against the Giants is the highest by any active player versus an opponent (minimum 50 PA).

Buster Posey topped the Giants with seven hits during the NLDS, his most in a postseason series. Posey is batting .370 (10/27) during a current six-game postseason hitting streak, tied for the longest of his career. His lifetime .360 regular season batting average versus the Cardinals is fifth highest among active players (minimum 75 PA). However, he hit just .154 (4/26) against St. Louis during the 2012 NLCS.

Adam Wainwright gave up a postseason career-high 11 hits and matched his high with six earned runs in his NLDS start at Dodger Stadium. For his career, Wainwright's 1.55 postseason ERA at home is the second lowest all-time (Mariano Rivera, 0.45) (minimum 40 IP). In the regular and postseason combined, Wainwright is 6-5 with a 2.95 ERA against the Giants.

Madison Bumgarner is expected to be named the Giants' Game 1 starting pitcher.  Bumgarner is 4-3 with a 2.96 ERA in nine career postseason appearances (eight starts). He threw a complete-game shutout at Pittsburgh in the NL Wild Card Game, and has thrown 19 consecutive scoreless innings in postseason road contests.
