The Orioles and Tigers will be meeting in the postseason for the first time. Detroit won five of six from Baltimore during the regular season, its first time winning the season series since 2009.

Baltimore's 96 wins were its most since 1997 (98), which was also the last time they took the AL East crown. The Orioles won the division by 12.0 games, their largest such margin since 1970 (15.0). They led the majors in home runs in consecutive seasons for the first time in franchise history. Baltimore has a 16-4 record all-time in Game 1's (including Wild Card Game).

Detroit has made four consecutive postseasons for the first time in franchise history. The Tigers are the first team to win four straight AL Central titles since the Indians won five in a row from 1995-99. They led the majors with 325 doubles, the fifth most in franchise history. Detroit is 8-13-1 all-time in Game 1's, with seven of its eight wins coming on the road.

Chris Tillman is the first Oriole to win 13 or more games in back-to-back seasons since Erik Bedard in 2006-07. Tillman's 29 wins since the start of last season are tied for fourth in the American League. He ranked sixth in the AL with a .173 opponent batting average with runners in scoring position and two outs (minimum 1 IP/Team G). Tillman is 3-0 with a 3.58 ERA in six career starts against Detroit.

Max Scherzer is only the second player in Tigers history to strike out at least 230 batters in three straight seasons (Mickey Lolich, 1969-72). Since 2012, Scherzer leads MLB in wins (55) and strikeouts (723). Seven of his nine postseason starts have come on the road, where he is 2-2 with a .176 opponent batting average and five quality starts. Scherzer is unbeaten in three career starts at Camden Yards, going 1-0 with a 4.95 ERA.

Nelson Cruz became the second Oriole in a row to lead the majors in home runs after Chris Davis did so in 2013. It was the first time in 77 years that a team had two different outright leaders in homers in consecutive seasons (Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio, Yankees, 1936-37). His 40 homers were the fewest for the MLB leader since Jesse Barfield in 1986 (40). Cruz has a career postseason slugging percentage of .683, placing him fourth all-time behind Babe Ruth (.744), Lou Gehrig (.731), and Carlos Beltran (.683) (minimum 100 PA).

Victor Martinez set career-highs in hits (188), home runs (32), batting average (.335), on-base percentage (.409), slugging percentage (.565), and OPS (.974). His on-base percentage led the AL, while his OPS was tops in the majors among qualifiers. He became the first player since Dustin Pedroia in 2009 to walk at least 70 times while striking out fewer than 50 times. After batting .405 during the 2013 postseason, Martinez enters this year as a career .314 postseason hitter, the 10th-highest average all-time (minimum 150 PA).
