The Pirates have lost six of seven, eight of 10 and 11 of 14 games, but Pittsburgh did take two of three from St. Louis in Pittsburgh from April 4-6. The Pirates have taken the season series from the Cardinals in each of the last two regular seasons (8-7 in 2012 and 10-9 in 2013), but the Cardinals won the 2013 NLDS in five games.

The Cardinals have lost four of five games and went 5-6 on their recently-completed 11-game road trip through Milwaukee, Washington and New York Mets. The Cardinals have gone eight straight games without hitting a home run. St. Louis last home run was hit by Allen Craig at Milwaukee on April 16.

It is the fourth time since the end of World War II that the Cardinals have had a streak of 11+ games with the starting pitcher allowing two earned runs or fewer (also 11 in 2003, 1982 and 1972). The last time St. Louis had a streak of 12+ games with the starting pitcher allowing two earned runs or fewer was when it reeled off 18 straight games in July 1944.

Gerrit Cole's only two career starts at Busch Stadium came in the 2013 NLDS. Cole won Game 2 (6.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K) and lost Game 5 (5.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 5 K). In three career starts (including postseason) versus St. Louis, Cole has allowed five total runs and all have come via the home run.

Shelby Miller is 0-5 with a 5.93 ERA in five career starts against the Pirates. He is the first Cardinals' pitcher to lose each of his first five career starts against a single opponent since Bob Forsch lost his first five starts against the Cincinnati Reds between 1974 and 1975.
