The Pirates went 11-8 against the Reds in 2013, before defeating Cincinnati in last year's National League wild-card game. The regular-season series is tied at 34 games apiece since 2010.

Pittsburgh had taken two of three games in each of its first three series of 2014, but then got swept by Milwaukee this weekend. The Pirates never scored more than two runs in any game and hit .178 as a team over the three losses.

After mustering a total of one run over their first two games versus Tampa Bay, the Reds exploded for 12 runs on Sunday. The dozen runs doubled Cincinnati's previous season high. The Reds also scored at least four runs in two innings, after never producing more than three runs in any prior frame this year.

With a career record of 8-12 versus Cincinnati, Wandy Rodriguez has lost more often to the Reds than any other opponent. Even though Rodriguez has tossed five consecutive quality starts against the Reds, he's winless (0-3) over that span due to weak run support (2.20 per nine innings).

Devin Mesoraco has hit in all four games since coming off the disabled list, going 7-for-14 (.500) with two home runs and six RBI. His slugging percentage currently sits at 1.143.

After winning his first six career decisions versus Pittsburgh, Homer Bailey is 2-5 over his last seven decisions against the Pirates. In his first two starts of 2014, Bailey has allowed four runs in each while not lasting more than 5.0 innings in either.
