Washington leads Atlanta by 2.0 games in the NL East. Since the beginning of 2012, the Nationals have spent 359 days in first or second place, while the Braves have spent 331 days in one of those two spots. Those are the two highest totals among National League teams.

After sweeping three games from Miami, the Nationals have opened 7-2 for the third straight season. They had opened as well in only three of the franchise's previous 43 seasons (including years as Montreal Expos).

Atlanta's pitchers have limited opponents to fewer than 10 hits in all nine games this season. But Braves hitters have collected at least 10 hits just once themselves. Only the Mets (0) have done so fewer times among National League teams.

With two hits on Thursday, Adam LaRoche raised his batting average to .344. He's collected 11 hits this season, matching his total through the end of April last year, when he was batting just .136 (11-for-81).

Justin Upton hit his first home run of 2014 in the second inning last night. He then blasted another in the third inning, producing his first multi-homer game since August 1, 2013. It was the seventh multi-homer game of his career.

With another couple hits on Thursday, Freddie Freeman is now 10-for-17 (.588) this season when playing at night, compared to 3-for-14 (.214) in day games.
