Justin Germano News
Germano exercised an opt-out clause in his contract last week to force the Red Sox to add him to the major league roster or release him, the Red Sox' official site reports.
Analysis: This bit of news slipped through when Boston promoted Germano in the wake of the Daisuke Matsuzaka injury. "I think it helped," said Germano. "It definitely put a little bit of pressure on them. I wanted to see where they were at and if they thought they had a place for me. If they didn't, then I'd have to look elsewhere to see if there was a better opportunity somewhere." It appears Germano, who pitched 5.2 scoreless relief innings in the first game of Saturday's double-header, will have a spot on Boston's staff after the All-Star break or be granted his release and become a free agent.
