The genesis of the goal came from a brilliant run down the flank and through the middle by Brazilian left full-back Marcelo, whose footwork opened up space to find Toni Kroos out wide.
The German midfielder then swung a cross over for Benzema to connect with on an acrobatic scissor kick, and the embattled French striker tucked home the effort.
