Barcelona star Lionel Messi was named La Liga Player of the Month for January, the Spanish top flight announced Friday. And amazingly, it's the first time he's been bestowed with the honour.
The award, which was first given to then-Atletico Madrid forward Diego Costa in September 2013, is an association football award that credits outstanding league performances.
"Barcelona has a balance of four wins and a draw, where the No. 10 has scored six goals. He registered a hat trick against Granada CF and scored against Atletico Madrid, Athletic Bilbao, and Malaga CF," a statement on La Liga's site announced Friday.
