Former Real Madrid director Valdano blasts Mourinho's 'ego' in new book; says Pep is better

Former Real Madrid general director Jorge Valdano takes aim at Jose Mourinho in a new book, condemning the Portuguese bench boss' ego and saying that he pales in comparison to Pep Guardiola.

Valdano is a beloved figure at the Spanish club, having played three seasons at the Santiago Bernabeu before managing the team to a league title in 1995.

The rocky relationship between the two men was well-documented, and in his book 'The 11 Powers of a League,' Valdano delves into greater detail about his ill-will towards the manager.

"He's a figure who is perfectly suited to these bombastic, shallow times," he writes, via FOX Soccer.

"I couldn't understand him because he is in the antithesis of my sensitivity. Intelligence and ego are enemies. And when they collide, the ego wins."

Valdano added that Mourinho's managerial achievements - which include two Champions League titles, a UEFA Cup victory and at least one league crown in each of Portugal, England, Italy and Spain - fall short of the accomplishments of noted rival Pep Guardiola.

"If Guardiola is Mozart, that makes Mourinho [Italian composer Antonio] Salieri. He would have been a great musician if Mozart had never existed.

"I've never heard him say a single thing about football worth remembering, whether in public or in private."
