"He felt something, but nothing serious. He didn't train with us this morning," manager Zinedine Zidane told reporters.

Zidane took the more cautious route and sat the Portuguese superstar ahead of next week's last-16 Champions League reverse leg against Napoli.

It is the fifth league contest Ronaldo has skipped this season - as many as he missed over the past two domestic campaigns. A knee injury which he suffered at Euro 2016 delayed the 32-year-old's start to the term.

The latest setback comes at a delicate time for Los Blancos, who relied on Ronaldo's heroics to secure a 3-3 comeback against Las Palmas in midweek action.

Zidane can choose from Lucas Vazquez, Mariano, and Marco Asensio as potential partners for Karim Benzema, but the opposition is no pushover. Currently in seventh place, Eibar is challenging for a European spot.

The Basque outfit now has a considerable chance against its vaunted visitor, with two of Madrid's top players out of commission.

Madrid is one point behind eternal rival Barcelona, although it has a game in hand.
