Ronaldo misses out on Sevilla cup clash, Odegaard included

Cristiano Ronaldo's name was noticeably absent from Zinedine Zidane's team sheet for Real Madrid's Copa del Rey last-16 tilt with Sevilla.

Real announced its 19-man squad for the midweek visit from Jorge Sampaoli's Andalusians with a statement on its website Tuesday, with the most striking inclusion being highly touted teen talent Martin Odegaard.

The club did not provide reason for Ronaldo's omission, though it's likely the Euro 2016 winner has been handed an extended winter break with four fixtures in the coming 13 days.

Centre-back Pepe will also miss out with a calf concern, while Gareth Bale continues his protracted recovery from a serious ankle injury suffered in late November. Merchant of late goals Sergio Ramos has also been handed a continued holiday.

Mired by stalled progression with Real's youth set-up La Castilla, Odegaard is using the Spanish domestic cup as a means of flirting with first-team football.

The 18-year-old Norwegian started Real's last cup match, a 6-1 drubbing of Cultural Leonesa, making a good account of himself with a 90-minute performance.

It was Odegaard's first start with the club, 679 days after a highly publicised move from Stromsgodset in January 2015. Amid speculation of a January loan spell, the nine-time capped international is set for his second appearance of the season when Real faces off with Sevilla for the first of three matches with the club in a two-week window.

Zidane and Co. will visit the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan for the return fixture on Jan. 12 before playing Los Rojiblancos again three days later in La Liga play.
