Lionel Messi ultimately came just short of Cristiano Ronaldo's record.
The Barcelona magician scored the opening goal of Tuesday's contest against Borussia Monchengladbach with a typically slick Blaugrana move, and with that tally moved to 10 in the Champions League this season.
That put the Argentine just one shy of Ronaldo's single-season mark for most goals in the group stage of the competition, though he couldn't find the net once more to equal the mark.
