Report: United planning January swoop for Atletico's Gimenez

Manchester United is looking to Spain in an effort to strengthen its back line once the January transfer window opens.

The Premier League side is said to be keen on signing a new centre-back, with Atletico Madrid's Jose Gimenez at the top of manager Jose Mourinho's wish list, sources have told ESPNFC's Miguel Delaney.

United's interest has been peaked by the Uruguayan's lack of playing time. Gimenez has seemingly fallen out of favour at the Spanish side after being limited to just three appearances in the opening months of the season.

Sources revealed to Delaney that Gimenez's lack of playing time is due to a personality clash with Atletico manager Diego Simeone.

Despite the reported falling out, it's believed that Atletico will not entertain offers worth less than €40 million.

United has also shown an interest in Gimenez's teammate, Diego Godin, but Atletico is believed to be unwilling to sell the 30-year-old defender.

United attempted to strengthen its defence during the summer when Eric Bailly completed his £30-million transfer from Villarreal. However, after a positive start to the season, the Ivorian defender has been out since October with a knee injury and is not expected back until next month.

The Red Devils have conceded 14 goals in 12 matches.
