Weird week in football: Knickers and kickers

Twitter

Every Monday, theScore will highlight the most outlandish moments from the wacky, sometimes daft, and perennially entertaining world of European football. Here's what made us smile - or cringe - on the pitch this past week.

Even a drab international break couldn't stop football's amusing side from shining through, and while the Mannequin Challenge did its best to take all the fun and toss it in the bin, there was still a handful of incidents over the last week worth noting.

The theme of the week is post-retirement endeavours. Usain Bolt has his eyes set on a post-sprinting career, Cristiano Ronaldo continued his underwear modelling career, and footballers across the continent over took turns providing poignant political analysis.

Here's a look at the weird week in football:

Ronnie's busy week

When not looking nasty in knickers, Real Madrid stud Ronaldo kept himself busy off the pitch with a pair of bizarre episodes. First, the Euro 2016 winner was the victim of a prank by national teammate Ricardo Quaresma.

Then the attacker, who scored his 67th and 68th international goals Sunday against Latvia, channeled his inner Kevin McCallister in an advert hawking something or another.

While on the subject of CR7, it's worth remembering a quote from recently named QPR boss Ian Holloway.

He’s six foot something, fit as a flea, good looking - he’s got to have something wrong with him. Hopefully he’s hung like a hamster - that would make us all feel better.

Good stuff, Ian.

Bottoms up: Dzeko pants Papastathopoulos

On the topic of scantily clad footballers, Bosnia and Herzegovina striker Edin Dzeko took umbrage with Greece international Sokratis Papastathopoulos' mean streak, yanking the Borussia Dortmund defender's pants 'round his ankles in protestation.

Both players were sent off in the 79th minute for the infraction in a 1-1 World Cup qualifying stalemate that was levelled courtesy of Georgios Tzavellas' 95th-minute equaliser. Cheeky stuff that.

French outlets fall for foolish Arsenal fanatic's fake story

Yahoo, RMC Sport, and L'Equipe (who have since deleted the post) were among those who fell for a story from March linking president-elect Donald Trump with his club of choice, Arsenal, and it would appear that the contentious business man-cum-politician is a member of the #WengerOut camp.

The story, which is a complete load on nonsense, features fictitious quotes from Trump, not the least of which is one lambasting the veteran gaffer. "Arsene Wenger has hurt so many souls worldwide, including myself. This man runs the club like his own property and he does whatever he pleases with it."

That's rich, especially "coming" from you, Mr. President.

Spot-kick snack time

As Adam Fraczczak stepped up to the spot to level matters for Pogon Szczecin against Lechia Gdansk in Polish top-flight action, the striker had a chocolate bar thrown at him by Lechia supporters.

Hankering for some sustenance, Fraczczak took a bite of the sweet snack before burying his penalty.

A weekly look at Patrice Evra's Instagram

This week in Patrice Evra's Instagram, the French international full-back and his countryman and former Juventus teammate Paul Pogba celebrate Les Bleus' 2-1 victory over Sweden with a stirring rendition of Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On."
