Valencia fined €1,500 after fan tossed bottle at Neymar, Barcelona players

Valencia was fined Wednesday following an incident over the weekend when a plastic bottle was launched into a pack of Barcelona players celebrating a late goal.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation, which announced that Valencia has been fined €1,500, also criticised Barca for its role in the incident, as players, including Neymar, were accused of provoking Valencia supporters in the moments after scoring a stoppage-time goal.

Barcelona star Lionel Messi scored a late winner from the penalty spot before he and his teammates celebrated near the goal. Cameras captured a bottle flying into the group of celebrating players, resulting in Neymar, Javier Mascherano, and Luis Suarez clutching their faces in apparent pain.

However, before celebrating, Neymar was captured screaming at the Valencia supporters, which allegedly triggered the bottle-throwing incident.

The RFEF condemned the actions of Barca players who provoked the incident, as well as those who pretended to get hit by the bottle before falling to the ground.

"The reproachable behaviour shown by some of the F.C. Barcelona players, who made certain gestures and expressions to the (Valencia) supporters as they celebrated the goal they'd just scored, should not be overlooked," the RFEF said in a statement, as translated Samuel Marsden of ESPN FC.

"Nor was it precisely an example of sportsmanship the way some of the club's players reacted - without having come into contact with the bottle - by simultaneously feigning they'd been struck by the object."

Neymar was criticised by Valencia midfielder Dani Parejo for inciting violence.

"Neymar was wrong to taunt the crowd," the midfielder told LaSexta, with translation from Marca. "The fan was wrong to throw the bottle, but so was Neymar."

Valencia has 10 days to decide whether to appeal the decision.
