Luka Modric named Croatia's new captain

In a country where expectations for the national are somewhere between high and unrealistic, Luka Modric is taking on an added level of pressure.
On Monday, exactly three weeks after Darijo Srna announced his retirement from international football in a moving letter, Modric was named Croatia's new captain.
"I'm so proud, this is a beautiful feeling," Modric said.
Croatia kicks off its 2018 World Cup qualifying at home against Turkey on Sept. 4, but Modric's first fixture as the Vatreni's captain will be played behind closed doors because of racist behaviour by supporters during a Euro 2016 qualifier against Italy.
