The Yellow Submarine is shipwrecked.

On Tuesday, in the second leg of the tie between AS Monaco and Villarreal in the Champions League's play-offs, Leonardo Jardim's side inflicted a 1-0 defeat on the Spanish club and progressed to the tournament's group stage with a 3-1 victory on aggregate.

After Villarreal suffered its first-ever defeat by a French club in the first leg, the Yellow Submarine needed to score at least two goals at Stade Louis II. But Monaco limited Fran Escriba's side to only one shot on target in the second leg, and Fabinho put the final nail in the coffin in the 91st minute, converting a penalty kick after Mateo Mussachio was incorrectly judged to have blocked a cross using his left arm.

Nine of Monaco's last 13 goals in European competition have been scored in its matches' final 30 minutes.

For Monaco, the victory was redeeming. Not only was Jardim's side eliminated from the last edition of the Champions League in the play-offs, but the club was also bounced by a Spanish team, falling 4-3 on aggregate to Valencia.

Meanwhile, for Villarreal, the defeat continued its downward spiral after losing Roberto Soldado to a torn anterior cruciate ligament and seeing Marcelino abandon the Yellow Submarine only days before the 2016-17 La Liga season kicked off.

The draw for the Champions League's group stage is scheduled for Thursday in Monaco, and Monaco, the club, will be placed in Pot 4.
