Arsenal will have to go back to the drawing board and hash out a new plan to bring in a defender.

The club's bid to sign centre back Shkodran Mustafi appears to be over after Valencia manager Pako Ayestaran ruled out selling the German international, along with striker Paco Alcacer, before the summer transfer window closes.

"Mustafi is not for sale and he will stay at VCF," Ayestaran told reporters Monday after Valencia's 4-2 loss to Las Palmas. "The market is open and there are still possibilities.

"With Alcacer, I can be as firm as with Mustafi, (club president) Lay Hoon already said it.

"The president has said in public that Alcacer and Mustafi are not for sale and I have to believe her."

Mustafi has been an Arsenal target since the club found itself in need of defensive help when Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista went down with injuries. Laurent Koscielny is also recovering from a knock but was able to play 90 minutes in last week's goalless draw with Leicester City.

On Monday, manager Arsene Wenger admitted he was optimistic about completing the deal for Mustafi, who was expected to cost Arsenal up to £30 million. Now it seems like the Arsenal gaffer will have to look elsewhere to find defensive relief.
