Manchester City has reached a preliminary agreement with Barcelona to sign goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, the Catalan club confirmed Saturday.

Bravo will leave for England once Barcelona works out a contingency plan.

"We have the beginning of an agreement with Manchester City for Claudio Bravo," said technical secretary Robert Fernandez. "We are awaiting events this week. When Claudio leaves, we hope to have a new keeper."

Bravo took part in Barcelona's 6-2 win over Real Betis on Saturday, as well as both legs of the Supercopa de Espana against Sevilla.

His release clause is reported at €42 million, but it appears City may strike a deal for half that amount.

Bravo would immediately assume No. 1 duties at the Etihad ahead of Willy Caballero and Joe Hart.

Barcelona's situation is fluid at the moment. Backup Marc-Andre ter Stegen - who's nine years younger than Bravo and considered the future in the Camp Nou goal - is currently on the sidelines with a knee injury. The Blaugrana reportedly want to secure a replacement before allowing Bravo to leave, with Ajax netminder Jasper Cillessen emerging as the most popular choice.

Negotiations stepped up once manager Pep Guardiola dropped Hart from City's first Premier League match of the season.

The biggest complaint against Hart is his apparent unease in possession. As evidenced by Manuel Neuer at Bayern Munich, Guardiola tends to prefer a mobile goalkeeper who can launch attacks from the back.

Whether Hart will end his 10-year association with City is a different question.

Guardiola said Friday he would allow the England international to leave the club if he doesn't want to fight for places.

Hart's current contract with the Citizens runs until June 2019. Sevilla and Everton are among the reported destinations for the 29-year-old.
