Report: Ronaldo doubtful for Real Madrid's La Liga opener

Real Madrid's quest for a 33rd La Liga title is quickly approaching, but whether or not it begins with Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly uncertain.

According to Reuters, Ronaldo is doubtful for Real Madrid's La Liga opener away to Real Sociedad on Aug. 21. The native of Madeira, Portugal is apparently still recovering from the knee injury he suffered during the final of Euro 2016, when Dimitri Payet caught the Portuguese superstar while following through on a tackle.

On Wednesday, speaking after Real Madrid beat Bayern Munich 1-0 in a pre-season friendly at the International Champions Cup, manager Zinedine Zidane refused to set a date for Ronaldo's return, preaching patience and saying his pupil will be back "soon."

"Right now he still has the injury," Zidane said. "Obviously he wants to be back but we need patience for him to be calm. He will be back with us soon in Madrid."

Ronaldo is apparently on holiday in North America and will miss Real Madrid's battle against Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup on Aug. 9.

In July, Ronaldo admitted to speaking with Florentino Perez, Real Madrid's president, about a new contract, saying: "When I get to Madrid, we will talk about it."
