Mascherano signs 1-year contract extension with Barcelona
Barcelona announced Wednesday the club has signed Javier Mascherano to a contract extension, locking down the Argentina defender to an additional one-year deal through June 30, 2019, as his original contract was set to expire in 2018.
The club's director of professional sports Albert Soler revealed details of the new deal during a press conference as Barcelona introduced its latest signing Andre Gomes to the media.
Mascherano enters his seventh season with the Blaugrana after signing from Liverpool in 2010 and has made 282 appearances with the club in that time. He joined the club as a midfielder but has primarily been used as a central defender, paired with Gerard Pique in the middle of the back four.
He has helped secure 16 titles for Barcelona during his tenure with the club.
