Cristiano Ronaldo to miss England friendly for rest

Real Madrid star and Portuguese international Cristiano Ronaldo will miss out on Thursday's Euro 2016 tuneup against England.

Days after his penalty handed Real a record 11th top-tier continental conquest, the 31-year-old conceded that he needs rest, but insists that despite fitness concerns, he will be fit for Portugal's first Euro match against Iceland on June 14.

When asked if he would suit up against England, Ronaldo offered, "No, come on! Let me rest my legs. Now is the time to rest and enjoy this moment. I (then) have six days to be prepared to play a good competition (at Euro 2016)."

"(I am) very tired. I have (played) more than 4,000 minutes this season. I was the No. 1 in the team again for most minutes (played). That means a lot to me: it means I am still good."

Portugal faces England on Thursday at Wembley Stadium in a final international friendly before this summer's quadrennial tournament in France.

"I still feel good physically, mentally. If you ask me if I feel tired tonight, of course. (I have) a lot of minutes in the legs but I am still there; I am always there."

Hampered by a thigh concern that saw him labour through 90 minutes and extra-time in Saturday's victory over capital rival Atletico Madrid, Ronaldo rose to the occasion when it mattered, scoring the decisive penalty.

"I showed the team I am there for the good moments and the bad moments. This is what makes me feel proud.

"I have scored more than 50 goals (every season) for seven years but I am always asking for more," Ronaldo added.
