Spain's Dani Carvajal set to miss Euros with hip injury

Real Madrid and Spanish national team full-back Dani Carvajal is likely to miss the Euro 2016 tournament after scans revealed a grade 2 injury to the right iliopsoas.

Carvajal had tests performed Monday in Madrid, and while the team conceded that the time frame for his return is uncertain, his chances of playing for Spain this summer are slim.

"After the tests carried out today at the Sanitas La Moraleja University Hospital the player Daniel Carvajal has been diagnosed with a grade 2 injury to the right iliopsoas. His recovery will continue to be assessed," a statement on Real's website said.

In layman's terms, that's a rather worrisome hip flexor injury, with the grade 2 severity implying that the 24-year-old could miss anywhere from one-to-four months.

Tough break for Carvajal, who also missed the World Cup with injury, and was likely to start in France for the holders Spain's defence of the tournament it has won twice consecutively.

Carvajal was injured during Saturday's Champions League finals victory over capital rival Atletico Madrid, and was in tears as he limped off with the assistance of Real's medical staff.

Behind every dark cloud there's a silver lining, and in this case, the beneficiary is Arsenal right-back Hector Bellerin.

After making an outstanding 90-minute Spain debut Sunday against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bellerin is likely to take Carvajal's place in Vicente del Bosque's squad when Spain plays the Czech Republic on June 13.
