Antoine Griezmann needs to clear out some space in his trophy cabinet, even if the silverware he's adding isn't quite what he would have hoped it to be.

The French forward, already bestowed with the Golden Boot as the top scorer at Euro 2016, was named Player of the Tournament on Monday - one day after his side was upset 1-0 by Portugal in the competition's finale.

Griezmann, 25, led Les Bleus with six goals in seven matches, at times single-handedly willing his side to victory. His two-goal showings against both Ireland and Germany will long be hallowed among the pantheon of all-time French performances, right alongside Michel Platini's record-breaking efforts at the 1984 European Championship.

UEFA chief technical officer Ioan Lupescu, who led the panel that selected the diminutive attacker for the award, outlined the decision by saying: "Antoine Griezmann was a threat in every game he played. He works hard for his team and possesses technique, vision and quality finishing.

"The technical observers were in unanimous agreement that he was the tournament's outstanding player."

Influential both in finding the net and helping his teammates do the same, the Atletico Madrid striker also chipped in with two assists. No player at Euro 2016 was directly involved in more goals than the blossoming superstar.
