Barcelona will not sell players to fund Nou Camp Nou

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has assured supporters that the Catalan club will not sell off any of its star players to mitigate the €600-million redevelopment of the Camp Nou.

Work on the stadium is not expected to be completed until 2022, and Barcelona will need the time to put its finances in order. With debts of more than €300 million, the Blaugrana will look for other revenue streams to subsidize the project. Members made the decision to hold an auction over the naming rights for the ground in April 2014, with prices quoted at €200 million.

"It will be the best stadium in the world. A club like ours must have the best stadium," Bartomeu said in a statement, according to Dermot Corrigan of ESPN FC.

"We need to have a lot of faith. We have to bring down the debt and find the best proposals for naming rights, as we agreed at the referendum, in order to press on with the Espai Barca (project), without ever putting our sporting viability at risk or selling a single one of our assets."

Fears that Barcelona could entertain offers for Neymar have intensified over recent months, despite the fact that he has a €190-million release clause. Talks over a contract extension also appear at a standstill, although Neymar's father said in February that all parties will reconvene in May.
