Real Madrid's Champions League quarter-final first-leg with Wolfsburg went from bad to worse five minutes before the interval, when striker Karim Benzema limped off with an apparent leg injury in the 41st minute.

Already favouring his foot after centre-back Naldo stepped on it earlier in Wednesday's fixture at the Volkswagen Arena, Benzema was brought down in the area, motioning for the medics while grabbing his left thigh.

Down two goals courtesy of a Ricardo Rodriguez penalty and a Maximilian Arnold close-range effort, Real appeared short on ideas before its star striker limped off the pitch.

Having already missed 12 matches this season with a thigh strain and back concerns, Benzema is quietly having a stellar campaign amid controversy stemming from the blackmail case with former teammate Mathieu Valbuena.

The 28-year-old, Lyon-born striker has 21 league goals in 21 starts paired with a quartet of tallies in the Champions League.

Benzema will likely have a scan after the fixture, putting into question his participation for Saturday's La Liga visit from surprise mid-table side Eibar.
