Spain's Villa ruled out of Euro 2012

Barcelona, Spain (Sports Network) - Spain striker David Villa has ruled himself out of Euro 2012 after failing to recover from a leg injury he suffered in December.

Villa broke his leg during the semifinals of the FIFA Club World Cup while playing for Barcelona, bringing an end to his season and now keeping him out of Spain's squad for this summer's competition.

The 30-year-old is the all-time leading scorer for Spain and was a key member in his country's title runs at Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup.

Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque is now likely to turn to Chelsea's Fernando Torres, who scored the winning goal in the Euro 2008 final, while Athletic Bilbao's Fernando Llorente will also see his time increased.

The Spanish open defense of their title on June 10 in a Group C meeting with Italy.
