The Borussia Dortmund loanee was invited to represent Scifo's outfit for Thursday's vital Euro 2017 qualifier in the Czech Republic - where the Red Devils were downed 1-0 - but turned down the opportunity to help out his country's younger ranks in order to remain at Dortmund's Brackel training complex.

Belgium first-team coach Marc Wilmots told Het Laatste Nieuws, according to ESPN FC: "He didn't exactly refuse, but we were not under the impression that he wanted (to play for the U21 side) no matter what. If that's the case, it's better to not come."

National team legend Scifo contacted Januzaj, who has five caps for the senior squad, by telephone to request his services. Scifo was disappointed the 20-year-old attempted to stall his decision so he could discuss the invitation with his representatives.

"A phone call like that is a present and not a punishment," Scifo said. "Adnan Januzaj has a bad mentality."

After an impressive breakout campaign for Manchester United in 2013-14, Januzaj's star has fallen. His temporary spell in the Bundesliga is intended to get the wheels turning on his career again.

The winger has managed just five substitute appearances for Der BVB this term.
