D.C. Mayor wants Redskins to change name

With the emergence of the Washington Redskins as a playoff calibre football team, there have been rumblings that the team would eventually move from their current home, FedEx field in Landover Maryland, back to a stadium within Washington D.C. proper.

D.C. Mayor Vincent C. Gray feels that before the team makes a move back to the capital, they should strongly consider changing their name to something less racist

“I think that if they get serious with the team coming back to Washington, there’s no doubt there’s going to have to be a discussion about that,” he said after a news conference, “and of course the team is going to have to work with us around that issue.”

“I think it has become a lightning rod, and I would be love to be able to sit down with the team … and see if a change should be made,” he said. “There’s a precedent for this, and I think there needs to be a dispassionate discussion about this, and do the right thing.”

The Redskins were 10-6 this season and made the playoffs for the first time since 2007.
