Jagielka pens Everton extension

Liverpool, England (Sports Network) - Everton announced Thursday that defender Phil Jagielka has signed a new contract that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2017.

Jagielka, 30, joined the Toffees from Sheffield United in 2007 and has become a staple in defense for manager David Moyes.

"We are delighted Phil has agreed to commit his long-term future here at Goodison Park," Everton chief executive Robert Elstone told the club's official website. "Phil is a hugely important and influential player and I, like many Evertonians, look forward to seeing him play in a blue shirt for many years to come.

"Discussions have been taking place for a short while and, now they are completed, I would like to thank Phil and representatives for the professionalism and courtesy shown throughout those negotiations."

Jagielka has totaled 16 caps for England after making his full debut for the national team in 2008.
