NHL files lawsuits in Federal Court
According to a press release on NHL.com, the league has filed a Class Action Complaint in Federal Court, as well as a Unfair Labor Practice Charge with the National Labor Relations Board in New York.
The lawsuits were filed in response to information that the players may vote to authorize the NHLPA Executive Board to "disclaim interest" in being represented in collective bargaining. The NHL is claiming these actions constitute engaging in "bad faith bargaining" and an unlawful subversion of the collective bargaining process. The league is also seeking a declaration on the legality of the ongoing lockout.
Needless to say, it takes less than a thorough understanding of law to see that this is very bad news for those hoping that the season will be salvaged any time soon.
More on this as it develops.
