Ailing thumb forces Rangers' Rios to miss second straight game

Aug 28, 6:11 PM

The Texas Rangers won't get Alex Rios back for Thursday's series opener against the Houston Astros. The 33-year-old continues to battle soreness in his right thumb, according to Gerry Fraley of the Dallas Morning News.

"It's sore," Rios told's T.R. Sullivan on Wednesday. "It's causing me to make adjustments in my swing that I don't want to do. Those things have implications, and I do things I'm not supposed to be doing. It affects you."

Rios was not in the lineup for Wednesday afternoon's 12-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners and has experienced soreness in his thumb since Aug. 19.

Rangers' Rios to miss 8th straight game with thumb injury

Sept 13, 11:32 AM

Texas Rangers outfielder Alex Rios will be held out of the lineup for an eighth straight game on Saturday with a thumb injury and it remains unclear if the 33-year-old will play again this season.

“I don’t know. That’s a tough call,” Rios told Adam Crouch of CBS Dallas/Fort Worth. “Depending on how I feel, I will make a decision on that issue.”

Rios was expected to miss at least a week after he was diagnosed with an infection in his right thumb on Sept. 5.

It's been a down season for Rios at the plate, as he's struggled to hit the ball for any power. In 131 games, the 11-year veteran has a career-low four home runs while slugging .398.

Texas Rangers outfielder Alex Rios was diagnosed with an infection in his right thumb Friday and is expected to be sidelined for at least one week of action.

Rios missed a pair of games last week due to soreness in his thumb, but has appeared in the lineup since, going 9-for-26 with one extra-base hit over seven games.

The 33-year-old has been slowed by injuries during the second half, producing an OPS nearly 250 points lower since the All-Star break.

Rangers' Rios scratched Tuesday vs. Marlins due to bruised right thumb

Aug 19, 6:15 PM

The Texas Rangers will be without outfielder Alex Rios for Tuesday's series opener against the Miami Marlins as the 33-year-old continues to battle discomfort in his bruised right thumb, according to Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Though Jim Adduci will take Rios' spot in the lineup, the 11-year veteran has been tremendously durable this season, appearing in all but seven of his team's games. The two-time All-Star is hitting .284/.313/.400 with four home runs and 16 stolen bases through 117 contests in 2014.
