Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson has been cleared to skate after undergoing surgery to repair a fractured left fibula in early July, according to the Washington Post.

Wilson suffered the injury in a fall, the details of which have not been revealed.

New head coach Barry Trotz is confident the 20-year-old will work hard to impress at training camp.

“I talked to him the other day,” Trotz said. “He’s feeling good. He knows he’s a little bit behind the eight ball, but he’s got it ramped up pretty good. I think he’s pretty determined to get back as quick as possible.”

In 82 games last season, Wilson scored three goals, added seven assists and registered 151 penalty minutes.

Apparently, Tom Wilson's injury went beyond a "rolled ankle".

According to his agent, Mark Guy, the Washington Capitals right-winger is recovering from surgery to repair a fractured fibula, stemming from a fall last week.

"Tom is resting and recovering nicely," Guy told CSNWashington. "He should be ready at some point during camp."

A former first-round pick (16th overall in 2012), Wilson played in all 82 games during his rookie season in 2013-14, notching three goals and 10 points while averaging a shade under eight minutes of ice-time a game.

Tom Wilson developed a reputation as a tough guy after recording 151 penalty minutes in his rookie season with the Washington Capitals, but it turns out the 20-year-old is just as vulnerable to random accidental injuries as the rest of us off the ice.

The team says it should know the extent of Wilson's ankle injury within a matter of days. Members of the Capitals medical staff are in touch with doctors evaluating the injury.

Washington selected Wilson 16th overall in the 2012 NHL entry draft.
