Report: MMA fighter War Machine attempts suicide in prison

MMA fighter War Machine reportedly attempted suicide in his prison cell on Tuesday night, according to TMZ.

War Machine, born Jonathan Koppenhaver, allegedly tried to suffocate himself by wrapping a piece of linen around his neck. Officers intervened in time to foil the attempt, and War Machine is said to be in medical isolation on suicide watch.

The fighter is in prison awaiting trial on 32 charges, including attempted murder, for allegedly attacking his ex-girlfriend Christy Mack and her friend Corey Thomas.

He is currently being detained in Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas.

Report: MMA fighter War Machine facing 32 felony charges, life in prison

The list of felony charges against former UFC and Bellator fighter War Machine is long and thorough.

According to ESPN, the man formerly known as Jonathan Koppenhaver appeared in a Las Vegas courtroom on Wednesday and was advised of the 32 charges he faces for an alleged assault on his ex-girlfriend and her friend. The charges stemming from the August 8 incident include attempted murder, domestic battery by strangulation, first-degree kidnapping and sexual assault.

The combined sentences could potentially add up to life in prison. Koppenhaver previously served time on an attempted battery conviction in 2012.

Koppenhaver was arrested in Ventura County, Calif., and extradited to Las Vegas on August 30 to appear in court. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 17.

The mixed martial artist known as War Machine was arrested on Friday in Simi Valley, Calif., after being at large for more than a week following the alleged assault of his ex-girlfriend. 

According to FOX Sports, U.S. Marshals apprehended the fighter, whose birthname is Jonathan Koppenhaver, and took him to Simi Valley City Jail, pending his extradition to Nevada. 

War Machine's ex-girlfriend Christy Mack, an adult-film actress, has accused him of a vicious assault that allegedly resulted in 18 broken bones around her eyes, a broken nose, a fractured rib, and ruptured liver. She posted photographs of the damage, along with a description of the incident, on her Twitter account

Koppenhaver reportedly entered her Nevada home last week in the middle of the night, attacking a man he found there before attacking Mack. 

The former UFC competitor was released by Bellator MMA last week following reports that he was involved in the assault, and, according to TMZ, had seven arrest warrants out, five of them for alleged felonies.
