The Miami Marlins selected catcher Blake Anderson with the 36th overall pick of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft on Thursday.
Anderson is a 6-foot-3, 180-pound product of West Lauderdale High School in Collinsville, Mississippi. The right-handed hitting catcher hit .438 with 14 doubles in 35 games this season.
The Marlins, who have a 23-year-old backstop in J.T. Realmuto on their 25-man roster, do not possess organizational depth behind the plate. Despite them filling a need, the pick caught many by surprise.
