Odemwingie lifts West Brom into fifth place
West Bromwich, England (Sports Network) - West Bromwich climbed into fifth place in the Premiership table on Monday as two goals from Peter Odemwingie helped the Baggies to a 2-0 victory over last-place Southampton at the Hawthorns.
West Brom entered the contest after back-to-back defeats in the league, but Odemwingie got them off on the right foot in the 36th minute when his shot from outside the area took a slight deflection off of a Southampton defender on its way past goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga.
The Saints came within inches of equalizing early in the second half when Rickie Lambert fired a shot off the crossbar on the turn, but the Baggies doubled the lead on the hour mark.
Shane Long got down the left wing and curled a cross into the middle of the area for Odemwingie, who headed it home to seal Southampton's eighth defeat in 10 games, which leaves the club rooted to the bottom of the league.
