Knuble on retirement: "I definitely want to play"
When Mike Knuble got the phone call from Washington Capitals general manager George McPhee that they would not be offering him a new contract, Knuble wasn't surprised.
After 15 seasons in the NHL, and just days away from his 40th birthday, Knuble found himself without a team heading into free agency.
"I hung up the phone and I don't know what I felt," Knuble told CSN Washington. "It wasn't unexpected... I had never gotten that call before. I think in my 16 years pro I might have been unemployed for a half a day total. I've always been signed on the first day of free agency," Knuble said.
Despite his age, and the minimal interest in him, Knuble has no intentions of retiring. He does have an idea of where he would like to play next season, if he had the option.
"Detroit would be a neat story since I was drafted there. I'll make no secret about that. That would be a nice way to come back around," Knuble said.
The Toronto native's production has slipped considerably in the last year, but that hasn't deterred Knuble. After eight straight seasons with at least 20 goals, Knuble managed just six goals and 12 assists in 72 games this season.
"I definitely want to play. I've been pretty adamant about that the last little bit," Knuble said. "The biggest thing is how you feel physically and I feel great. Mentally, I can definitely go another season. I enjoy the competition."
