Nats' Gonzalez wins NL Pitcher of the Month
New York, NY (Sports Network) - Washington Nationals left-handed pitcher Gio Gonzalez was voted the National League Pitcher of the Month for the month of May on Sunday.
Gonzalez was 5-0 with a 2.25 ERA in 32 innings in May. In addition, the lefty led the NL with 45 strikeouts, while only walking 13. Hitters hit only .156 against Gonzalez throughout the month.
For the second straight month, a National won the award. Nats right-hander Stephen Strasburg received the honor in April. Washington is the first club to have winners in the first two months of the season since 2009, when Ubaldo Jimenez won in April and May for the Colorado Rockies.
Others receiving votes included R.A. Dickey of the Mets, Phillies starter Cole Hamels, Chris Capuano of the Dodgers, San Francisco's Ryan Vogelsong and Santiago Casilla and Pittsburgh's James McDonald.
