Lakers to retire Shaq's jersey in 2012-13
The Los Angeles Lakers will retire Shaquille O'Neal's number 34 jersey in the 2012-13 season, according to NBA.com's Scott Howard-Cooper.
The team first announced their intentions to retire Shaq's number following his retirement in 2011, but the ceremony was postponed until next season due to the NBA lockout.
Shaq spent some of the best years of his career with the Lakers, winning three NBA Championships in 2000, 2001 and 2002. Shaq is also sixth on the NBA's all-time scoring leaders list with 28,596 points. He was recently knocked out of fifth place on the list by former teammate Kobe Bryant.
Lakers owner Jerry Buss released a statement congratulating Shaq saying, "His contributions were significant to the entire NBA, but we specifically appreciate what he did with and what he meant to the Lakers during his eight years with us."
