The injury to Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard appears to be worse than expected.

The netminder told the Detroit Free Press on Saturday that he could be out for 4-to-6 weeks with a broken finger rather than the 2 games the team announced on Friday. Howard added that surgery has been ruled out.

Howard, who leads the NHL with 32 wins, broke the index finger on his right hand during Thursday's 4-3 shootout victory at Vancouver. The Red Wings said he will be re-evaluated when the team returns to Detroit next week following their four-game road trip.

The club plays in Edmonton on Saturday and Phoenix on Monday to close out the trek.

Howard has a 2.03 goals-against average, a .924 save percentage and five shutouts this season.

The Red Wings have recalled goaltender Joey MacDonald from Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League to back up Ty Conklin.
