Jacques Martin fired

The Montreal Canadiens have announced that Jacques Martin has been relieved of his duties as head coach.

The Canadiens currently sit last in the Northeast Division and in a tie for 11th in the Eastern Conference with 33 points.

They don't have a single player in the top-40 in scoring, with the team's leading scorer, Tomas Plekanec, ranking 41st in the NHL with with 25 points. While the Habs currently hold the second best penalty kill in the NHL at 89.9 per cent, their power play is ranked 28th at 12.1 per cent.

Martin has been a head coach a total of 16 NHL seasons, and an assistant for seven. In his tenure as bench boss, his teams have only missed the playoffs on five separate occasions. He has coached the Blackhawks, Senators, Panthers and Canadiens.

Martin has a career record of 613-481-119-81.

Randy Cunneyworth will take on the role of interim coach for the remainder of the 2011-2012 season.
