5 things we learned in Ligue 1 this weekend: The renaissance of Hatem Ben Arfa

With another weekend of Ligue 1 action in the books, we take a look back at five things we learned from the latest slate of matches.

Monaco cannot win at home

The principality club's underwhelming Ligue 1 campaign continued Friday with a 1-1 draw against Lyon at the Stade Louis II, as Leonardo Jardim's Monaco failed to win at home for the fifth time this season in as many tries.

Les Rouges et Blancs have drawn three times and lost twice at home, including a 3-0 trouncing at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain and a 3-2 loss to an attack-minded Lorient.

Monaco's last three fixtures have all been at home - including a Europa League match against Tottenham - and all three results finished 1-1 with a draw with Rennes sandwiched by Friday's final and the continental tilt with north Londoners Spurs.

Marseille continue to ride the goal-scoring exploits of Michy Batshuayi

Over their last five matches in all competitions, Marseille managed only four goals, with three losses bookended by two draws. Were it not for Belgian international Michy Batshuayi, their 16th place standing, four perilous points above the relegation zone, would be far worse.

Date Opponent Result Goalscorer
Sept. 23 @ Toulouse  1-1 M. Batshuayi
Sept. 27 Angers  1-2 M. Batshuayi (pen)
Oct. 1 Liberec  0-1 none
Oct. 4 @ PSG  2-1 M. Batshuayi
Oct. 18 Lorient  1-1 M. Batshuayi (pen)

The 22-year-old's penalty against Lorient on Sunday was enough to give the home side a share of the points at Stade Velodrome.

Despite Batshuayi's best efforts, Marseille remain winless in their last five Ligue 1 matches, their longest streak since March 2014.

Sebastien Squillaci has a death wish

Few people stand up to Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Whether it be his towering frame or his generally salty demeanor, scarcely any footballers have confronted the Swedish legend despite his sometime impetuous ways.

Bastia defender Sebastien Squillaci bucked that trend Saturday following the home team's 2-0 defeat to the reigning Ligue 1 champs, as the former Arsenal defender confronted Ibrahimovic post-match and gave him a piece of his mind.

The video footage, courtesy of CANAL+, captures Squillaci sharing some choice words in French, which when translated read: "You're sh**. You aren't a great player. You should show a little more respect to others."

Ibrahimovic's brace was the difference as the capital side had little trouble with the islanders and Laurent Blanc's men maintained their five-point cushion atop Ligue 1.

If it's any consolation for Bastia, the Corsicans have only lost one of their last six matches against top-flight title holders.

Montpellier replace Lille as Ligue 1's most futile goal-scorers

As documented here and here and here and here, Lille started the 2015-16 Ligue 1 campaign with an aversion to goal, save for the heroic efforts of Sofiane Boufal.

With only five goals for and five against through 10 matches, Lille's futility in front of goal has been offset by their stingy defense, as they sit 13th on 11 points, but within striking distance of the top half.

Despite scoring one goal more than their friends to the north, Montpellier do not have the luxury of a passable, nay, mediocre defense, which coupled with a lack of recent goals sees Rolland Courbis' side sitting 18th on five points.

After having failed to score in their first four matches of the Ligue 1 campaign, Montpellier returned to their futile ways after a 2-1 victory over Lorient on Sept. 27, with a 2-0 loss to fellow brothers in fruitlessness Lille and a scoreless draw with Bordeaux on Sunday.

Four years removed from a league title to treading water precariously trapped by the prospects of relegation, Montpellier continue to endure a treacherous spell.

Goals of the Week: Nice Edition

Hatem Ben Arfa was at it again Sunday, marauding down the right wing to score another brilliant individual goal, his seventh in nine matches for the South Coast side.

Full credit to Ben Arfa's most recent display, but this week's Goal of the Week goes to his young teammate, Said Benrahma, whose effort 25 minutes later was deserving of all the honours.

Ben Arfa's resurgence from a mercurial five-year spell with Newcastle coincided with his club's return to prominence in Ligue 1, as Sunday's 4-1 victory over Rennes vaulted Claude Puel's side above four clubs and into fifth place with a match in hand.

Nice's 24 goals for are tops in the league, and their goal differential of plus-12 is second only to table-toppers PSG.

A la prochaine, mes amis.
