Marseille president Vincent Labrune hopes to avoid further punishment
The problems at Marseille aren't limited to the poor results on the pitch, as the South Coast club could face further sanctions for violent crowd behaviour during a 1-1 draw with Lyon.
Marseille president Vincent Labrune doesn't think the club will incur further punishments when the French disciplinary commission deliver their verdict Oct. 15, with a points deduction a very real possibility for a club that sits 16th, four points clear of the relegation zone.
The president of the French Football League (LFP), Frederic Thiriez, proposed the chance of a points deduction for the crowd trouble during the Sept. 20 Ligue 1 match, according to ESPN FC.
Former Marseille midfielder Mathieu Valbuena's return to Stade Velodrome was a black eye for Ligue 1, with bottles and missiles thrown from a crowd littered with hateful signs and an effigy of the diminutive French playmaker.

In addition to a provisional penalty that saw sections of Stade Velodrome shuttered for the following two matches, the club announced that they would reintroduce protective netting to prevent future displays.
Labrune discussed the club's reaction to the events that marred what should have been the league's marquee matchup.
"After that I'd emphasise - it might sound silly but it's better saying it - there were no deaths, no injuries, no confrontations, no pitch invasions," he said.
"What there was was three bottles thrown. That's something that we condemn."
One look at Lyon shot-stopper Anthony Lopes moonlighting as a garbageman should contradict Labrune's assessment of the crowd trouble.
"We're going to make sure that it won't happen again but it's something that happens frequently in football," Labrune said.
"There's a system of laws in place and there's no reason that we might be punished beyond the existing scale."
