5 things we learned in Ligue 1 this weekend: Hosting Bordeaux is a Trapp

With another weekend of Ligue 1 action in the books, we take a look back at five things we learned from the latest slate of matches.

Troyes makes everyone look like Barcelona

For fear of stating the obvious, Ligue 1 new boys Troyes have a few defensive shortcomings.

A 10 man Caen dominated Saturday's visit to Stade de L'Aube 3-1 in a match that on paper, scoreline aside, would favour Troyes, but the ever-industrious eye test would say otherwise.

A nominee for outstanding goal of the weekend was courtesy of a deft touch from gangly Caen attacker Ronny Rodelin, who chipped the ball up with his right foot, only to lob it to teammate Julien Feret, who then emulated his colleague by cheekily lofting it over Troyes 'keeper Denis Petric.

Troyes nicked one late in injury time to make the scoreline a touch less embarrassing at 3-1. The north-central side sits perilously in 18th, having allowed an atrocious 12 goals to four scored for a calamitous goal differential of -8 through five matches.

Might be time for Salvatore Sirigu's return

The Kevin Trapp transition in the capital may have hit a snag, as the Paris Saint-Germain shot-stopping summer signing had a nightmare of a match during the reigning Ligue 1 champs' 2-2 draw with Bordeaux.

Trapp made as many errors leading to goals in the Bordeaux match as Salvatore Sirigu made in the last two seasons, according to Ligue 1 statistician OptaJean.

First, there was this error gifting Les Girondins a first half equaliser:

Then, the ex-Eintracht Frankfurt 'keeper momentarily lost any and all sense of urgency, allowing Bordeaux midfielder Wahbi Khazri to knot the score with little more than 10 minutes to play:

Faith in Sirigu had withered following a less-than spectacular Champions League display, though with Trapp's latest display in mind, the fit again Italian might be value for the start Tuesday at home to Malmo or for Saturday's visit to Reims.

Rennes is France's hottest side

Sitting second in the table behind a PSG side that has yet to lose a match, Les Rouges et Noirs of Stade de Rennais have sprinted out of the gates to claim 12 points from a possible 15.

A disappointing opening weekend 2-1 loss at Bastia has been followed with four wins on the trot, outscoring opponents 8-2 during that span including snatching a win at Lyon and Sunday's 2-0 win away at a nine-man Nantes.

Paul-Georges Ntep made his first start for Rennes on the campaign and banged in his first goal for a side looking to capitalize on poor starts by bigger clubs and build on last year's ninth-place finish.

Marseille's predilection for the superb

For all the talk of the Marseille summer transfer exodus of established talents and a manager, the 2015-16 Olympique is littered with names that have shown a penchant for scoring breathtaking goals.

This week, the honour goes to budding French full-back Benjamin Mendy, who netted the first of four in a drubbing of Bastia.

Bastia supporters looking for a silver lining can be thankful they didn't make the ferry from Corsica.

Lille has an aversion to goals in any form

Not unlike other Ligue 1 outfits, a transfer window rife with exports lowered expectations, as newly-appointed gaffer Herve Renard faced a Lille squad with more questions than answers.

One of these prevailing concerns was in the goals department, and boy have they not disappointed: five matches played, one goal scored, and one goal allowed.

The club's two away matches, at top-half certainties Monaco and Lyon, both ended in goalless draws, with a Sofiane Boufal goal at home to GFC Ajaccio cancelling out a Lucas Moura PSG strike three weeks earlier.

Even with nary more than a goal to their name, at least the club has man of leisure Vincent Enyeama to lean on.

A la prochaine, mes amis.
